Gemini Cites Your Website First for Local Answers: UK Guide 2026

Gemini leans on business websites for local answers and almost never repeats its pick. What a 14,472-citation study means for UK small business owners.

On 19 August 2026, Search Engine Land reported that a Steady Demand study of 14,472 citations across 1,487 local search queries found business websites made up roughly 60 per cent of Gemini's local citations, with Reddit a distant second at 13.7 per cent. The same study found identical queries returned overlapping sources only around 40 per cent of the time. Both halves of that finding matter, and the second half is the one most people skip.

What did the Gemini local citation study actually find?

Steady Demand looked at 14,472 citations from 1,487 local queries across the 50 largest United States metro areas and 10 service categories, comparing Gemini and ChatGPT. As reported by Search Engine Land on 19 August 2026, business websites took about 60 per cent of Gemini's local citations while Reddit took 13.7 per cent, and directories, review platforms and forums combined came in below Reddit. ChatGPT behaved differently, relying far more on Reddit and business directories.

The headline reads like good news for small firms. The thing you own, your own website, is the thing Gemini quotes most for local questions. That inverts the assumption that built a decade of local marketing budgets, where directory listings were bought because a small site could not outrank them.

Two honest caveats. The sample is American, covering US metros, so it demonstrates model behaviour rather than a verified UK outcome. And a citation is not a recommendation. Being quoted in an answer and being the business named at the top of it are separate events, which is where the second finding bites.

Why does Gemini favour business websites over directories?

The most defensible read is that Gemini is retrieving pages that state facts plainly and specifically, and a service business page tends to state facts more specifically than a directory row does. A directory listing says a firm exists in a town. A well built service page says what the job costs, how long it takes, which postcodes are covered and what the guarantee is. When a model is assembling an answer to a specific question, the page with the specific answer wins the citation.

That is a claim about behaviour, not a statement from Google, so hold it loosely. What is not loose is the practical consequence. If the model prefers pages that answer the question directly, then thin pages that only say "electrician in Leeds, call us today" have nothing to be quoted from. The fix is not more pages. It is more answers per page.

This is the same underlying shift covered in the difference between AI search and traditional SEO for UK firms, where retrieval rewards extractable facts rather than keyword coverage.

How unstable are AI local recommendations compared with Google?

Very. According to Search Engine Land's 19 August 2026 report, Gemini recommended the same top business on only about 7 per cent of repeated identical queries, while Google's local pack returned the same top listing roughly 90 per cent of the time. Gemini and ChatGPT cited the same domains just 8 per cent of the time, and named the same top business only 4.2 per cent of the time.

Read those together and the strategy changes shape. Chasing a fixed position in an AI answer is chasing something that does not exist. What exists is a probability of inclusion.

Does any of this change things for UK owners specifically?

Yes, in one concrete way. Search Engine Journal reported on 10 June 2026 that Google added a Business Profile connection and Business Notebooks to the Gemini app, allowing owners to query performance, get AI-drafted review replies, update hours and post seasonal updates. That rollout began globally excluding the EEA and the UK. So UK owners face the same AI-driven demand shift without the assistive tooling other markets received.

The practical effect is that the work stays manual here. Review replies, hours, photos and seasonal posts all get done inside the Google Business Profile interface, by a person, on a schedule. That is a cost, but it is also a reason to build the habit properly rather than wait for a shortcut. Owners who already run consistent local search fundamentals lose nothing when the tooling arrives, and gain a tidy dataset for it to work from.

Context on scale: GOV.UK's Business Population Estimates 2025, published 2 October 2025, counted roughly 5.6 million UK private sector businesses with fewer than 50 employees, over 99 per cent of the total, and most of those have no employees at all. Which means most of the firms affected by this have no marketing department and no spare afternoon.

Which pages on a small business website earn local citations?

Pages that answer one question for one place. In practice that means a page per service crossed with the towns genuinely served, each carrying prices or price ranges, response times, coverage postcodes, qualifications, and the actual objections customers raise. Generic county-wide pages and stacked location pages with swapped town names tend to be the weakest performers, because they contain no extractable fact a model can quote.

A simple test before publishing: read the page and ask whether a stranger could answer three customer questions from it without ringing you. If not, it is decoration.

How should a UK small business sequence this work?

Do not treat AI visibility as one project. Sequence it against what is already broken, because the cheapest fix almost always outranks the most exciting one.
  • If your name, address, phone and hours differ across your site, your Google Business Profile and your main trade directory, then fix that first and do nothing else this month. The SOCi index reported by Search Engine Land on 28 January 2026 found platforms prioritise consistency across sources and filter out incomplete or inaccurate profiles.
  • If your average rating sits below 4.0, then reviews are the priority. That same report found recommended locations averaged 4.3 stars on ChatGPT and 3.9 on Gemini.
  • If your data is clean and your rating is healthy, but you have fewer than five real service pages, then writing those pages is the highest-value work available.
  • If you have solid pages already, then check they render without JavaScript and load fast, because a page a crawler cannot read is a page that cannot be cited.
  • If all four are done, then move to measurement and repeat-query tracking rather than buying another tool.
  • If you sell to businesses nationally rather than to consumers locally, then most of this ranks lower than it does for a trade or a salon, and effort belongs elsewhere.

What does the maths look like for a real UK business?

Take a domestic electrician in Leeds with an average job value of £320 and 18 website enquiries a month, converting about one in three. That is six jobs a month, roughly £1,920 in monthly revenue from the site. These figures are an illustrative model, not survey data, but they are the shape most single-van trades recognise.

Say the owner writes eight service and area pages properly. Doing it in-house costs about 10 to 12 hours. Paying a competent UK freelancer costs somewhere in the region of £900 to £1,600 as a one-off. Assume a modest lift of four extra enquiries a month, which is a 22 per cent increase, not a miracle. At the same one-in-three close rate that is 1.3 extra jobs, about £420 a month, or roughly £5,040 a year.

Against a one-off £1,200, payback lands inside three months and the pages keep working. Compare that with a £99 a month AI visibility subscription at £1,188 a year, recurring, which reports on the problem rather than fixing it. The tool is worth buying second, once there is something to measure. Owners weighing writing costs against outsourcing can work through the content cost comparison before committing.

When is chasing AI visibility the wrong call?

When the numbers do not support the effort. Search Engine Land's 28 January 2026 report on SOCi's index of nearly 350,000 locations found ChatGPT recommended only 1.2 per cent of locations, Gemini 11 per cent and Perplexity 7.4 per cent, against a 35.9 per cent appearance rate in Google's local 3-pack, with SOCi describing AI visibility as three to 30 times harder to win.

For a business at capacity, or one whose customers come from referrals and repeat trade, that is a poor use of the next £1,000. The honest trade-off is that AI answers are a growing share of a small pie, while local pack and organic remain the larger, more predictable one. The useful part is that the work overlaps heavily. Clean data, real reviews and specific pages serve both, which is why the sequencing above starts with fundamentals rather than with anything labelled AI.

What should a UK owner do this week?

Five tasks, roughly three hours total, no budget required.
  1. Write down the five questions customers actually ask before booking. Real wording, not keywords.
  2. Ask each one in Gemini and ChatGPT three times, in an incognito window, and log every business named and every domain cited. Expect inconsistency, given the roughly 40 per cent source overlap reported by Search Engine Land on 19 August 2026.
  3. Open your Google Business Profile and your website side by side. Correct any difference in hours, phone number, address or service area today.
  4. Pick the single service that makes the most money and rewrite that page to answer all five questions, with a price range and a coverage list.
  5. Reply to every review from the past 90 days. UK owners cannot lean on Gemini's drafting tools yet, per Search Engine Journal's 10 June 2026 report, so block 20 minutes and write them.

Then repeat step two in 30 days and compare the counts. That is the whole measurement loop, and it costs nothing but attention. A structured version of the same audit, including which surfaces to track and how often, sits in the AI visibility framework.

Common Questions

Gemini Cites Your Website First for Local Answers — FAQ

Does Gemini really prefer my own website over Yell or Checkatrade?

For local service queries in this dataset, yes. Search Engine Land reported on 19 August 2026 that in Steady Demand's analysis of 14,472 citations, business websites accounted for roughly 60 per cent of Gemini's local citations, with Reddit second at 13.7 per cent and directories, review platforms and forums together landing below Reddit. That is a reversal of the old local playbook, where directory listings did a lot of the heavy lifting because they outranked small sites. The caveat matters though. The study covered the 50 largest United States metro areas, so it shows a behaviour pattern rather than a guaranteed UK result. Treat it as a strong signal that your own pages are the asset worth improving, not as a promise about Leeds or Cardiff.

Why does Gemini give a different answer every time I ask?

Because the retrieval is not stable. According to Search Engine Land's 19 August 2026 write-up of the Steady Demand study, identical Gemini queries returned overlapping sources only around 40 per cent of the time, and Gemini recommended the same top business on only about 7 per cent of repeats. Google's local pack, by contrast, returned the same top listing roughly 90 per cent of the time. So the honest framing is that AI local answers behave like a shuffled shortlist rather than a ranking. Your goal is not to hold position one. It is to be in the pool of businesses the model can draw from, and to appear often enough across repeated asks that you show up in a meaningful share of them.

Can I manage my Google Business Profile through the Gemini app in the UK?

Not yet. Search Engine Journal reported on 10 June 2026 that Google added a Business Profile connection to the Gemini app, letting owners ask how the business performed, get AI-drafted review replies, update opening hours and post seasonal updates, plus a Business Notebooks workspace that flags unanswered questions and missing holiday hours. The rollout began globally that month but excluded the EEA and the UK. Practically, that means UK owners do the same work manually inside the Google Business Profile interface. It also means the convenience gap is temporary, so building tidy habits now, such as consistent hours, real photos and prompt review replies, pays off whenever the tooling does arrive.

Is AI visibility harder to win than a Google local pack place?

Considerably, on the evidence available. Search Engine Land's 28 January 2026 report on SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, which covered nearly 350,000 locations, found ChatGPT recommended only 1.2 per cent of locations, Gemini 11 per cent and Perplexity 7.4 per cent, while locations appeared in Google's local 3-pack 35.9 per cent of the time. SOCi described AI visibility as three to 30 times harder to achieve than ranking well in traditional local search. The same report found fewer than half of the brands leading Google local search also led AI recommendations. So strong Google performance is a useful base, not a free pass, and the two need separate measurement.

What should a small firm fix first if budget is tight?

Fix the facts before you fix the content. Make sure your name, address, phone number, opening hours and service area are identical on your website, your Google Business Profile and the two or three directories your trade actually uses. SOCi's index, as reported by Search Engine Land on 28 January 2026, found the platforms prioritise consistency across sources and effectively filter out businesses with incomplete or inaccurate profiles, and that recommended locations averaged 4.3 stars on ChatGPT against 3.9 on Gemini. After that, spend the remaining time on one honest page per service and town you genuinely serve, with prices or price ranges, and a plain contact route. That order costs least and moves most.
